Pooja Anand is a Grade 11 student at Kelowna Secondary School and is honored to be sponsored by the Kelowna Business Ambassadors for Lady of the Lake program.
Pooja was born in India and came to Canada with her parents and elder brother when she was 5 years of age.

Pooja is a high achiever – not only does she strive for straight ‘A’s in her full course load of sciences, she is also an active member of the KSS Senior Dance Team, dance honours and peer tutor for Grade 10 dance. Pooja enjoys physical activities such as yoga, pilates, kick-boxing, basketball, swimming, snowboarding, skiing, and taekwondo.
Pooja has worked (part time) since the age of 12, mainly in retail sales and customer service. She has also volunteered for over 75 hrs and loves to help others in the community. On personal side, Pooja is a very social and open minded person.

She loves poetry, art, music, and fashion.Pooja’s dream is to become a scientist and to find cure for diseases especially related to brain cells. She is passionate about making a difference in this world! She would love to travel the world-and one day would love to explore ‘space’.

The Kelowna Business Ambassadors are proud to announce that we will be sponsors of the Miss Kelowna Lady of the Lake Society for 2009.

The Miss Kelowna Lady of the Lake Society, is a non-profit society working with the City of Kelowna, provides training and guidance to those young women in our community who choose to better themselves through the Miss Kelowna, Lady of the Lake program.

The work of the society is by volunteers from different areas of the community who give of their time to implement the training program. Volunteers who wish to share their skills in training, speech, fashion, modeling, theatre, stage prep, time management and organization, chaperones, etc. are recruited for the training, which starts in late January and runs until the pageant in July.

The Lady of the Lake is a young woman who has a personal presence that leaves a favourable and lasting impression with the integrity to meet anyone in an honest and genuine manner.

The right candidate must have self assurance and judgement to converse intelligently, the finesse to meet dignitaries in any social setting, the natural warmth and grace of a young lady, as well as intelligence, talent, good health and fitness, and excellent public speaking skills.

The Miss Kelowna Lady of the Lake Society offers a six month training program which focuses on public speaking, networking, area knowledge, stress and time management, self defence, nutrition, and car maintenance to name a few.

This is an opportunity for young women who will be 16 by December 31, 2008 and no older than 18 by August 1, 2009 to obtain skills that will help them succeed in many aspects of life.

About Karen Gilkyson - My parents moved us from Nicaragua to Canada when I was 9 years old. I have always been so grateful to all the many people that helped our family along the way, and felt like I should find a way to pay it forward.

I chose a full-time computer industry career but had felt that I was missing something in my life; it was not gratifying enough and I knew that I could offer so much more.

So in 2006 I launched a part-time home based business with a Swiss health and wellness company and began sharing it with my family and friends. I was in love with the products and the opportunity, and I really loved that I could do it alongside my fulltime job.

I was promoted to District Manager in my first month, and was so excited to have some of my family members start the business with me. Three months later, I promoted to Area Manager. This is when it really occurred to me that my new business could absolutely improve our lives. All I had to do was teach and train people about this wonderful opportunity, helping them reach their goals. Since that time I have been able to leave my full-time job, move to the Okanagan valley & dedicate my time to educating people on using products that are botanically based, Vegan Certified & safe for the skin, as well as give them options on becoming financially independent or a way for them to earn just an extra $200 a month.

My Success - I attribute my success to writing down very clear and specific goals on a monthly and weekly basis. I viewed those goals daily and got myself into massive activity. I finished my regional with minutes to spare. It is in that last day, the last hours and the final minutes that promotions are made and lives are changed.

Giving back - I am involved in activities that give back to my community and that I absolutely enjoy doing. I love the freedom that my business has provided for me and my husband, we are so excited for we know that our future is full of endless possibilities.
